Clam diggers can return to
waters near Logan International Airport, more than a year after
they were forced out and state officials declared the area a
security zone, the Associated Press reported.
Clam diggers were evacuated from five miles of clamming
territory in Boston Harbor the day after the Sept. 11 terrorist
attacks. Massachusetts Port Authority officials then set up a 500-
foot security zone around the airport, AP says.

A new law permitted 50 shell fisherman to enter the zone,
after they gave fingerprints, passed criminal background checks
and attended anti-terrorism classes. Jose Juves, Massport
spokesman, called the law a “less than ideal” way to secure the
airport, AP said.
Three beds near the airport are crucial sources of clams in
Massachusetts and essential to the industry, clam diggers told AP.
