Bush praises Chamber members; technical problems prevent dialogue

The novelty of President George W. Bush addressing members of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce on his tax cut last Monday (April 16) was that the speech was fed by satellite to sites around the country, including the conference center at the Holiday Inn Express in Woonsocket.

The Rhode Island site — represented by the Northern Rhode Island Chamber of Commerce — was to be one of six centers where a person could directly ask President Bush a question about the tax cut plan. However, a technical problem thwarted the interactive portion of the program.

Bush began the address by praising the American business person.

“It’s kind of nice to be able to speak to so many folks in so many cities without having to fire up Air Force One,” he said. “I’m especially honored to be able to speak to the folks who really help our economy grow, the entrepreneurs and business folks of America, the employers, the risk takers”

H. Tony Deller, a partner with the accounting firm Pirolli, Deller & Grande was to be Rhode Island’s spokesman. He was disappointed he could not speak to the President, but after months of grueling tax preparation, he said, nothing really bothers him. He also said he was prepared for the possibility of not speaking.
