Bush’s total for the second quarter this year is more than
five times the $6.7 million raised during the same period by
former Vermont Gov. Howard Dean, the only Democrat to release
his quarterly fund-raising figures.
Bush’s fund-raising performance approaches the fund-raising
record for a single quarter that he set in the second quarter of
1999, when the then-governor raised $37.3 million for his bid to
capture the Republican nomination. Bush raised a record $100
million for his 2000 campaign.

“Given that Bush is unopposed, and is drawing from the
entire Republican donor base, and that Democrats are splitting a
smaller pie, in reality, they won’t be able to catch up,” Noble
said.
About $21.7 million of the quarterly total came from personal
appearances by Bush, Cheney, and first lady Laura Bush. Of that
total, Bush raised about $17.8 million with personal appearances
in Washington, New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco and
Greensboro, Georgia. Cheney appeared in Boston and Richmond,
Virginia.
The rest of the money came in the form of $4.5 million in
contributions in response to direct mail solicitations that
averaged $54 per donation, $7.3 million in unsolicited mail
contributions, and $700,000 in online contributions.
