Business plan competition nets 75 proposals

Rhode Island’s first business plan competition, sponsored by the Business Development
Company of Rhode Island (BDC) in partnership with the Rhode Island Economic Development
Corporation attracted a total of 75 proposals.

Entrepreneurs from around New England contending for $50,000 underwritten by the BDC, submitted proposals that ranged from training and publishing companies to Internet startups.

Ten semi-finalists were selected from the submitted proposals.

“Rhode Island has always been home to entrepreneurs, and the goal of the competition was to promote entrepreneurship and the development of start-up and early stage companies in the state,” said Garrett B. Hunter, president of BDC. “We expect that the winning plan will help a fledgling company become another local success story.”

The winner, to be selected by a panel of nine judges, will be announced the evening of May 17 at the monthly meeting of the Brown Venture Forum in Providence. In addition, the top five plans will be invited to present on May 18 at Venture 2001, Rhode Island’s investment forum.
