Kernan F. King, a retired business executive with Rhode Island roots, officially launched a campaign Monday looking to become Rhode Island’s next lieutenant governor.
King, a Republican, supports Rhode Island’s Republican governor Donald L. Carcieri. Charles J. Fogarty, a Democrat and the state’s current lieutenant governor, is challenging Carcieri in the upcoming election later this year.

Much of King’s professional background is in the financial services sector. He was formerly president of New England Mutual Life Insurance Company, which was later acquired by MetLife in 1996. King retired from MetLife in 2002 after serving as executive vice president there.
King became a certified financial planner in 2003 and with his son, Kurt, is currently the owner of King Financial, a South Kingstown insurance agency.
King graduated from LaSalle Academy and Providence College and later received his law degree from Boston University School of Law in 1968.
