Calif. jury upholds Hexagon patent

NORTH KINGSTOWN – A federal court jury in San Diego has upheld the validity of a patent held by Hexagon Metrology’s ROMER Inc., in a dispute with FARO Technologies, but the question of whether infringement occurred remains unsettled.

In ROMER Inc. vs. FARO Technologies Inc., pertaining to U.S. Patent No. 5,829,148, the federal jury found unanimously in favor of ROMER, saying its patent is valid.

The jury was unable, however, to reach a unanimous decision on the question of patent infringement, so the judge has ordered a new, shortened trial – with a new jury – to decide that issue. The new trial is set to begin April 3.

The patent dispute involves a key feature of articulated arm coordinate-measurement machines: the ability to rotate a swivel axis indefinitely without encountering a hard stop.
