The state Department of Health has posted an application for Canadian pharmacies that want to seek licensure to do business in Rhode Island, a day after coming under fire for not having applications ready by yesterday, when regulations allowing licensure kicked in.
The application is posted at www.health.ri.gov.

The General Assembly passed a law in July requiring the Department of Health to establish a program for licensing Canadian pharmacies by Jan. 15. Following some heavily attended public hearings, the department approved regulations essentially extending its application process for out-of-state pharmacies to Canadian ones.
“So far, only two Canadian pharmacies have expressed any interest,” said Donald C. Williams, associate director for health services regulation, in a news release Thursday. “The regulations took effect yesterday, and we offered ‘next-day service’ for pharmacies who may have called for an application. None did. By placing it on the Health Web site, we can make it available immediately.”
Rhode Island is the first state to formally license Canadian pharmacies, though others have come up with alternate arrangements, such as an Illinois-initiated program called I-SaveRx that allows residents to buy drugs from Canada, the United Kingdom and Ireland.
