Carcieri aims to tighten clean energy standard, help fund hydro

Gov. Donald L. Carcieri held a press conference Friday at the Harris Mill dam in Coventry to unveil a new plan to use hydro – or water – power to bolster Rhodie Island’s supplies of renewable energy.
As part of this plan, the governor will announce that the state is helping to finance a modern, energy-efficient turbine and power plant at the Harris Mill dam on the Pawtuxet River.
Carcieri also plans to call for an increase in the state’s renewable energy standard – the percentage of energy used in the state that is derived from renewable sources such as wind and water. The state’s renewable energy standard is currently set at 15 percent.
