Coventry-based Concordia Manufacturing recently doubled its manufacturing work force – from 30 full-time workers to 60 – after the company refocused its business to attract more biomedical work along with its traditional textile clients.
The increase in workers took place over a five-month period. In addition, the company is now contracting 10 full-time temporary workers.
“We have almost 100 years of experience in designing technical yarns. Now, we are using our fiber engineering expertise to help doctors at leading biomedical firms design artificial arteries and prosthetic ligaments,” said Randal Spencer, president and CEO of Concordia.

In 2003, the company restructured itself to focus on new opportunities in the biomedical field while continuing to expand its fiber engineering skills to its core base of technical fabric manufacturers. Concordia’s core customers include companies such as Velcro, BASF and 3M.
The company’s biomedical products include the engineered yarns and fibers for antistatic and anti-microbial protective fabrics, prosthetic ligaments, artificial arteries and other proprietary applications.
“We believe that our R&D talents coupled with our manufacturing expertise creates unique value for a great range of customers. We are optimistic that we will continue this growth and add jobs throughout the year,” said Spencer.
