The United States Environmental Protection Agency has ordered Coventry-based Cosmed to comply with federal clean-air regulations.
The company uses ethylene oxide, a known human carcinogen, to sterilize medical equipment, and the order specifically requirees the company to comply with sections of the National Emissions Standards for Hazardous Air Pollutants.
Cosmed installed the necessary control equipment on aeration room vents in August of 2001. The order was issued because the company has not properly tested the control equipment on either the sterilization chamber vents or the aeration room vents.
