CVS reports increase in second quarter earnings

WOONSOCKET, R.I. — Drugstore chain CVS Corp. today said second quarter earnings increased 6.2 percent over last year.

The company posted net income of $198 million, or 48 cents per diluted share, compared with $186.5 million, or 46 cents per share, during the same period last year.

Second quarter sales increased 11.2 percent, to $5.5 billion, compared to $4.9 billion a year ago. Same-store sales increased 8.3 percent, while pharmacy same-store sales increased 13.2 percent.

CVS is the nation’s second-largest drugstore chain. As of June 30, the company operated 4,130 retail and specialty pharmacy stores in 31 states and the District of Columbia.
