CVS reports record August sales

Woonsocket-based CVS Corp. announced that total sales for the four-week period ended Aug. 28 increased 32.1 percent to $2.59 billion, compared to $1.96 billion in the prior year period, including the impact of the July 31 acquisition of approximately 1,260 stores, as well as a pharmacy benefit management and mail order pharmacy business. Total pharmacy sales represented 71 percent of total company sales in August.

Same store sales (sales from stores open more than one year) increased 5.2 percent over the prior year period for the four weeks ended Aug. 28. Pharmacy same store sales increased 6.8 percent, while front-end same store sales increased 1.6 percent. Same store sales do not include the sales results of the acquired stores. The acquired stores will be included in same store sales following the one-year anniversary of the acquisition, beginning in fiscal August 2005.

Year-to-date, total sales for the 34-week period ended Aug. 28 increased 10.5 percent to $18.39 billion, compared to $16.64 billion in 2003. Same store sales for the 34-week period increased 5.8 percent over the prior year period. Pharmacy same store sales increased 7.3 percent, while front-end same store sales increased 2.7 percent.
