CVS Chairman and CEO Thomas Ryan was awarded an honorary Doctor of Business Administration degree by Johnson & Wales University during the school’s commencement recently. Also receiving honorary degrees were Noel Irwin Hentschel, chairman and CEO of American Tours International, and Barry S. Sternlicht, chairman and CEO of Starwood Hotels & Resorts Worldwide, Inc.
In all, 5,616 Johnson & Wales students received their degrees in separate commencement exercises held in Providence; Norfolk, Va., Charleston, S.C., North Miami, Fla., and Vail, Colo.

Ryan, who joined CVS as a pharmacist in 1975, has held numerous managerial and professional positions in the company. In 1994, he was named president and chief executive officer of CVS Pharmacy, Inc. Under his leadership, the Rhode Island-based company has become the nation’s largest drug store chain, with more than 4,000 stores in 25 states and annual revenues exceeding $15 billion.
Ryan serves on the Board of Trustees for both the University of Rhode Island and the Brown University School of Medicine, the Board of Directors for Fleet Financial Group, Reebok International, the Rhode Island Philharmonic and Trinity Repertory Company, and is a member of the Rhode Island Public Expenditures Council. Along with Gov. Lincoln Almond, he co-chairs the Rhode Island Economic Policy Council.
