The Department of Environmental Management announced Monday that test results from all 89 mosquito pools from a total of 26 traps set statewide during the week of July 18 are negative for both West Nile Virus and Eastern Equine Encephalitis (EEE).
However, West Nile Virus is well-established throughout the state and the country, according to the DEM. Residents are encouraged to eliminate mosquito breeding grounds from yards by removing anything that holds standing water such as old tires, buckets, junk and debris and clean gutters so they drain properly.

The DEM suggests that residents use screens on windows and doors, put netting over playpens and baby carriages when they are outside, and use mosquito repellent, (except on infants) to avoid bites.
To date, no mosquitoes have test positive for West Nile or EEE and no birds have contracted West Nile. Residents are encouraged to call the DEM’s dead bird surveillance hotline at 788-3698 to report crows or bluejays that appear to have recently died and that show no signs of external injury. These birds will be tested and might indicate where additional testing is needed.
Tests from last week’s trapping will be reported by DEM on or by Wednesday of next week.
