Derderians liable for workers’ comp violation

Jeffrey and Michael Derderian, owners of The Station nightclub, are personally liable for a $1.06 million fine for violating the state workers’ compensation insurance law, Judge John Rotondi ruled this morning.

The fine stems from the Derderians’ failure to carry workers’ comp insurance on the West Warwick business, the site of a fire that killed 100 people. Four employees were among the dead.

The decision comes in a state appeal of a ruling by a Department of Labor hearing officer that said the brothers could not be held personally liable for a $1.06 million fine. The fine was also imposed against the Derderians’ company, Derco LLC. Lawyers for the Derderians have appealed the penalty against Derco LLC to the state Supreme Court.
