The U.S. Supreme Court, turning away an
appeal by a telemarketing trade group, refused to question the
national “do not call” registry that bars unsolicited sales
calls to more than 63 million phone numbers in the state.
The justices let stand a federal appeals court’s
conclusion the registry doesn’t violate the free-speech rights of
companies seeking to market their products on the phone.

In other developments, the court:
— Rebuffed a bid by Visa International Inc. and MasterCard
International Inc. to continue barring 34,000 member banks from
distributing credit cards of American Express Co. and Morgan
Stanley’s Discover Card unit.
— Refused to impose new limits on punitive damages, letting
stand a $9 million award against State Farm Mutual Automobile
Insurance Co. in a policyholder dispute.
