National and international political and business news could make anyone want to curl up into a ball and try and sleep it all off like a bad case of the flu.
Thankfully, Providence Business News’ yearly Innovation Awards program is just what the doctor ordered to combat that instinct. Every year, we have far more entrepreneurs doing exciting things than we ever could recognize, Together, they lift me out of any funk I may have fallen into with regard to Rhode Island’s future. These folks are that good.
Our Innovator of the Year, Dr. Barrett Bready, leads a company (NABsys Inc.) that is rewriting the rules for how we access information from DNA. Believe it. The company has attracted millions of dollars in grants and investments from people far more attuned to this marketplace than I could hope to be.
The Innovation Champion, Hasbro Inc., is a Rhode Island-born and -bred success that has realized that you must do more than talk about innovation. The company sponsors an Inspiration Expo, a Grand Idea Fair and an Innovation Awards program of its own, complete with the “Inny Award.” Hasbro is so far beyond your father’s Monopoly.
I won’t give away anymore of this special section’s secrets. Just trust me when I say that our future is quite bright with these folks on the job.
As is always the case, we would not be able to present this program without the help of our sponsors, who this year include Bryant University, Cox Business, Edwards Angell Palmer & Dodge, Gencorp and AM790.
