John Martin has left his positions as director of corporate communications for the Economic Development Corporation to join Providence integrated technologies company BX.com as vice president of marketing. Martin, who initially announced his plan to leave the EDC internally, the first week that Thomas Schumpert began his position as director, said his leaving has nothing to do with Schumpert’s arrival.
Martin said he met the BX.com people in April during the Mass.-Exodus campaign, which was an EDC-driven venture to bring companies from out of state to Rhode Island. The company came from Boston and an alliance was established between Martin and the company.

”I was always looking for an opportunity to translate my experience from journalism to the private sector,” said Martin, who from 1987 to 1999 was the television critic for the Providence Journal.
He had only been with the EDC for 16 months. Before moving to the Providence Journal, Martin was a talk show host at the Journal’s radio station, WEAN 790 AM.
”I basically did broadcasting and journalism for 30 years,” said Martin, who had done other work in radio since his high school days.
At press time Martin’s former position had not been filled.
BX.com, which has offices in San Jose, Calif., Washington D.C., and Boston, is looking to expand. Launching the expansion into other cities will be one of Martin’s main tasks.
