Carcieri for Governor
The campaign for governor has had its share of finger pointing and chest thumping. When the dust settles, however, it is clear that Gov. Donald L. Carcieri deserves four more years.
The governor has a business-friendly agenda, creating the conditions for healthy economic growth. He has worked to encourage businesses to locate or expand here; he has supported development/preservation efforts with the historic tax credits; and he believes the state’s income tax policy needs to be brought more in line with our neighbors – something his opponent, Lt. Gov. Charles J. Fogarty, does not favor.

Further, Mr. Carcieri has made an honest effort to clean up a number of public scandals, Blue Cross and Beacon Mutual among them.
Plenty of work remains – we especially need more leadership on reining in health care costs.
We believe Mr. Carcieri will continue to tackle the tough problems, and that’s why we urge you to support his bid for re-election.
Roberts for Lt. Gov.
In her 10 years in office, state Sen. Elizabeth H. Roberts has quietly made a big impact on Rhode Islanders’ lives. She has taken the time to listen and learn about health care, the elderly and small business, and has led the way in crafting wise, public policies to move our state forward.
Though we don’t always agree with her politics, she has a strong record of working with both business and labor. As an MBA and a businesswoman, she speaks our language.
Retired Gen. Reginald A. Centracchio deserves our respect, but we don’t feel he could make as big an impact in office as Senator Roberts. We enthusiastically endorse her.
No conflict, it’s Harsch
Attorney General Patrick C. Lynch has worn out his welcome.
He earned deservedly mixed reviews for his handling of The Station night club fire prosecutions and the lead paint case.
But he never should have accepted campaign contributions from the attorneys for DuPont, one of the original paint defendants. It is a conflict of interest, plain and simple.
For that reason alone, we endorse his challenger, J. William W. Harsch. Happily, Mr. Harsch’s tenure as director of the R.I. DEM and chairman of the R.I. PUC makes him eminently qualified to hold this important position.
Stenhouse for integrity
It’s easy to underestimate the importance of the secretary of state’s office.
Yet as electoral fiascos in other states have shown us, it really matters whom we choose for that office. Integrity matters; openness matters. And as Matt Brown has shown, a commitment to reaching out to the public matters.
We’re endorsing Sue Stenhouse over A. Ralph Mollis because she has an impeccable reputation, a strong record of working with people and solving problems, and good ideas.
