PROVIDENCE — Eight Rhode Island towns have taken action to express concern over the proposed container port at Quonset Point/Davisville, according to the coalition group Citizens for Rhode Island’s Future.
The town councils of Narragansett, Jamestown, South Kingstown and Bristol all recently passed resolutions joining North Kingstown and Newport’s statement against a container port earlier this year, the coalition group said. In addition, the town council of Charlestown unanimously voted to support the resolutions passed by other towns, and New Shoreham voted to send a letter in support of the resolution passed by North Kingstown.

According to Amie Bergin, spokeswoman for Citizens for Rhode Island’s Future, which formed in February of this year, her group is not outright opposed to a container port. However, she believes the current plan being offered by Governor Lincoln Almond and the Rhode Island Economic Development Corporation is flawed, and that alternatives should be explored for the land in question.
“The plan (that is in place right now) takes a gamble with taxpayers’ money, with no guarantee of a significant return,” she told PBN.com.
Citizens for Rhode Island’s Future currently is comprised of 18 area organizations and companies.
