EMC drops plans for Bellingham offices

HOPKINTON, Mass. — EMC Corp., the data storage giant., announced that it was
withdrawing its plans to build a 147-acre office complex in Bellingham, Mass.,
because of a dispute with the town’s zoning board. The company, which had announced
that it expected to open the new facility in 2003, now says that it is uncertain
when, whether or where it will build the proposed complex. EMC employs 600 Rhode
Islanders in various locations in Massachusetts and proposed to hire or transfer
2,700 engineering, research and development staff to the Bellingham site.
