WASHINGTON, D.C. — The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has awarded $446,500 to the Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management under the Superfund Multi-Site Agreement Grant Program. Rhode Island has 12 identified Superfund sites. The Superfund was established in 1980 to deal with the results of abandoned or uncontrolled waste sites. “These funds will allow our Department of Environmental Management to take the steps necessary to restore sites in our state that have been wracked by hazardous waste and other pollutants,” said Sen. Jack Reed, whose office released the announcement.
