EPA begins cleaning up suspected Warren dump

WARREN – The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has begun a three-month cleanup to remove surface soils containing hazardous substances, including lead and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), from the Birch Swamp Road site.
The project follows investigations last summer and earlier this year that found excess contamination at the location, which officials believe was once used as a dump for excess vehicle and military equipment. The one-acre site is off an unpaved access road that intersects Birch Swamp Road heading west. Most of the area is a large grassy field, where the junkyard is thought to have been located. The targeted area also includes a small piece of neighboring woods.
There will be warning signs, access restrictions, traffic-control measures and other safety precautions taken during the project. &#8226
