The Boys & Girls Club of Fall River received a $10,000 award from the Dominion Foundation in support of the Stay in School program. The afterschool program focuses on academic success in at-risk teens through education, work force and career training and financial-management counseling.
“The club is focused on encouraging and equipping its members to survive and thrive in their academic lives,” said Peter McCarthy, executive director of the Boys & Girls Club of Fall River. “This could not be possible without the timely and important grant from the Dominion Foundation.”
In addition to annually graduating 30 teens that had dropped out or were in danger of dropping out, Stay in School activities include: tutoring; researching post-secondary education, such as applications and scholarships; job-interview practice; resume assistance and graduation incentives.
“We are most pleased to offer our support to this very important program in the Fall River community,” said Lisa Lundy Kusinitz, community affairs representative at Brayton Point Station. The power plant is the largest fossil fuel burning plant in New England; it is owned and operated by Dominion Energy Brayton Point LLC, a subsidiary of Dominion.
In 2008, Dominion, its charitable foundation and employees invested more than $20 million and 100,000 volunteer hours in local programs and initiatives in the 12 states where Dominion operates power stations, natural gas and other energy facilities. •
