The U.S. Labor Department’s Wage and Hour Division and the State of Rhode Island’s Department of Labor and Training have established a formal working relationship to enhance enforcement of federal and state laws regulating work by minors in this state.
According to a statement issued by the U.S. Department of Labor, the U.S. Labor Department’s Northeast Regional Wage and Hour administrator and the director of the Rhode Island Department of Labor and Training have signed an agreement to inform each other about potential violations of labor laws involving young people.

Among the initiatives agreed upon by the two departments are:
- Coordinated education efforts to inform employers, school systems and minors of child labor laws
- The exchange of child labor complaints, statistical information on violations in specific industries and geographic areas and violations of specific hazardous occupation orders
- The exchange of information on accidents and serious injuries to minors
- Exchange of information and prior history on repeat violators and information on civil money penalties assessed against violators
- The exchange of information or enacted changes to state and federal child labor laws
- Joint investigations, when appropriate.
