Filene’s, the department-store chain owned by May Department Stores Co., is starting a
smaller, suburban store that may help it to move into new markets,
the Boston Globe reported.
The new store can be changed quickly to reflect changing
fashion trends, the newspaper reported. The store has moveable
walls and reversible panels, May design unit President Richard Tao
told the paper.

The company is unveiling one such store at the Searstown Mall
in Leominster, Massachusetts, the paper said. Rivals of St. Louis-
based May such as Wal-Mart Stores Inc. are also trying smaller
stores amid increased competition, the paper said.
Smaller stores also help reduce costs such as rent at a time
of slowing retail-sales growth, the paper said.
