One year after signing a “Friendship Pact” with the Mayor of Florence, Italy, Providence Mayor Vincent A. Cianci, Jr. has unveiled the official lineup of the Splendor of Florence Festival. The city-wide festival, to include several cultural and culinary events and activities, will take place at 12 Providence locations from Sept. 18 through 26.

An exhibition of 16th and 17th century Medici Family portraits lent by the world-renowned Uffizi Gallery. It will be held at the David Winton Bell Gallery at Brown University from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. each day of the festival.
An international exhibition of contemporary works inspired by Medieval and Renaissance masterpieces, to be held at the Old Stone Bank building on South Main Street.
Artisans’ workshops – where eight artisans will demonstrate their crafts, at the Old Stone Bank Carriage Houses on South Main Street.
Italian and American opera singers collaborate in an international musical celebration at the Providence Performing Arts Center Saturday, Sept. 18 at 8 p.m.
Feinstein Family Day, featuring hands-on, educational activities for children.
A special Splendor of Florence WaterFire to celebrate the closing of the festival on Saturday night, Sept. 25. The evening will also include “Tastes of Tuscany” at Market Square on South Main Street and the “Music of Medici,” performed by the Brown University Chamber Chorus at the Central Congregational Church.
The festival will also include several lectures at Brown University and Providence College and the opening of Casa Fiorentina – a traditional Florentine restaurant that will be open for the week of the festival at the Federal Reserve on Dorrance Street. Run by chefs from Florence’s famous trattoria Quattro Leoni, Casa Fiorentina will feature a traditional Tuscan menu and an authentic atmosphere found only in Florence.
Splendor of Florence is now accepting reservations for lunch and dinner, which can be made by calling the festival office at 276-0913.
“The city is buzzing with activity equipment to be used by Florentine artisans at their festival workshops is arriving daily, as are cases of wine and Food from Tuscany,” said Cianci.
