Former R.I. attorney charged with embezzlement

PROVIDENCE — A statewide grand jury has indicted Robert G. Simmons, 67, of Abbott Run Valley Road, Cumberland, charging him with embezzlement and filing false documents. State Attorney General Sheldon Whitehouse announced that Simmons, a former Rhode Island attorney, while representing an estate, allegedly fraudulently converted $250,000 of the estate’s funds to his own use. The grand jury indicted Simmons on one count of embezzlement over $100, a felony; and two counts of filing false documents, misdemeanors. Simmons is scheduled to be arraigned Oct. 18 in Providence County Superior Court. Simmons was suspended from practicing by the Rhode Island Supreme Court in July 1997.
