Boston’s deciding victory over Oakland
in the American League playoffs on Fox gained the fifth-highest
nationwide ratings for the fifth game of an opening postseason
series and beat ABC’s “Monday Night Football” in the top 55
U.S. markets.
The Red Sox’s 4-3 win Monday night drew 8.5 percent of viewers
in the 108.4 million U.S. households with televisions, according
to Nielsen Media Research Inc.
That beat last year’s opening-round fifth game between San
Francisco and Atlanta on New Corp.’s Fox by 23 percent. The
record for a first-round Game 5 was 11.6 for the New York Yankees-
Seattle in 1995. Next was a 9.8, shared by the 1997 AL series
clincher between the Yankees and Cleveland and Sunday’s night win
by the Chicago Cubs over Atlanta that clinched their National
League series, and followed by a 9 for Boston-Cleveland in 1999.
