Gillette Co., the world’s largest
razor maker, said fourth-quarter profit rose 6.4 percent, the
smallest gain in two years, as the company spent more on
marketing.
Net income increased to $368 million, or 36 cents a share,
from $346 million, or 33 cents, a year earlier, Boston-based
Gillette said in a statement. Sales gained 3.7 percent to $2.62
billion, boosted 7 percent by the declining U.S. dollar.

Profit fell 2 percent at the razor unit, which produces more
than half of Gillette’s earnings. Chief Executive James Kilts is
adding products such as a battery-powered men’s razor to the top-
selling Mach3 line. He’s also increasing promotions and
advertising to protect against losing sales to Energizer Holdings
Inc.’s Schick, which sells a four-blade shaver.
