Gillette to shed 225 jobs at Irish electrical appliance factory

Gillette Co. said it will shed
about 225 workers at a factory in Ireland that makes hair dryers,
curling irons and electrical shavers for the company’s Braun
household appliances unit.

The workforce of the Carlow factory will be cut to about 580
people from 805 over the next six months, the company said in a
faxed statement. Braun, which set up the factory in 1974, is the
town’s biggest employer.

The decision is part of the company’s “in-depth assessment of
its worldwide operations,” the statement said. A spokeswoman at the
plant who declined to give her name would not provide a more
detailed explanation.

Gillette Chief Executive James Kilts, who took over 18 months
ago, has already cut 3,700 jobs to save money. The company said in
April that Braun’s first-quarter income fell because a sales
increase of 2 percent was mostly of less profitable appliances.

Gillette is the latest overseas company to reduce its workforce
in Ireland. Celestica Inc., a Canadian maker of electronics for
brand-name companies, said last week it would fire 250 workers
because of lower demand.
