PROVIDENCE, R.I. — Governor Lincoln Almond today hosted the Second Annual Governors’ Regional Transportation Summit, during which he resolved to re-establish the New England Governors’ Conference Committee on Transportation.
The New England committee will be directed to meet regularly to discuss all aspects of passenger and freight transportation, including intermodal options, in the six-state region, the Governor Almond’s office said.

Attendees of today’s summit included Massachusetts Governor Paul Cellucci and Connecticut Governor John Rowland. The three governors found that they share common concern with regard to issues such as congested highways, expanding airports and underutilized rail and waterways. In addition, the governors emphasized the need for a comprehensive, efficient and coordinated approach to New England’s transportation needs, especially in an increasingly global economy.
“We cannot build our way out of congestion on our roadways, and that is what makes a regional approach to moving goods so important,” said William Ankner, Ph.D., Director of the Rhode Island Department of Transportation. “By putting freight onto rails and using air cargo, we have the ability to lighten our burden on the New England states’ infrastructure.”
