Governor’s Workforce Board names new head

PROVIDENCE – The Governor’s Workforce Board has appointed Rick Brooks its executive director.

For the past three years, the position was filled on an acting basis R.I. Department of Labor and Training staff: first by John O’Hare, assistant director for the DLT, and most recently by Lisa D’Agostino, deputy director. Although the state labor department is a separate entity, its staff provides administrative support to the board, a new release said.

The 17-member board was established in September 2005 to develop, implement and support strategies that increase and improve the skill base of Rhode Island’s work force.

Brooks was chosen from a 59-candidate pool. Previously, he was the executive director of the United Nurses and Allied Professionals union, representing 5,500 health care workers in Rhode Island, Vermont and Connecticut, for 13 years. Before that, he served as associate director for the Institute for Labor Studies and Research for seven years.

“Rick brings more than 25 years of comprehensive workforce development leadership experience to this position, and we are excited to have someone of his caliber and skill serving as our top administrator,” said board chair Constance A. Howes who is the president and CEO of Women & Infants Hospital.

  • Michael Grey, vice president of operations, North East region, Sodexo School Services.
  • Paul A. MacDonald, president, Providence Central Federated Council.

  • Brandon Melton, senior vice president of human resources, Lifespan.
  • Sharon O. Moylan, realtor/associate, Coldwell Banker.
