PROVIDENCE – Greenlee Textron Inc., an Illinois-based professional tool manufacturer and a division of Textron Inc., announced July 31 the launch of its new C3 Auto Whip cable-cutting machine.

Greenlee designed the C3 Auto Whip to make notching and cutting through armored cables, metal-clad cables and flexible metallic conduit both safer and more efficient.

Typically, workers notch and cut such cables with either a hand tool or a manually operated machine equipped with an open saw blade. Both methods tend to be labor intensive and repetitive, according to Greenlee, requiring a worker’s full attention to complete the task safely.

The C3 Auto Whip features a touch-screen interface to allow the operator to input the cable size, type and desired length. The operator then pushes a button to start the machine, which automatically cuts the cable into “whips” of the desired length, leaving the operator free to walk away and work on other tasks.

Jae Lee, product manager at Greenlee, said the C3 Auto Whip is the first fully automated machine with touch-screen interface capable of notching and cutting armored and metal-clad cables as well as flexible metallic conduit.

“This machine greatly improves labor productivity while keeping workers safer, which is the goal for everyone,” Lee added. “The C3 Auto Whip is safer than any current cable-cutting machine that’s available because the cutting saws on the C3 Auto Whip are fully enclosed by the machine’s housing, which is designed to protect workers from injury.”

Additional features of the C3 Auto Whip include an emergency stop button to halt machine operation if necessary, a lock-and-tag system to ensure the machine is safely powered down during maintenance and a USB input to allow uploading of custom whip configurations.
