Narragansett Electric Co. unveiled GreenUp, a program offering residential and small-business customers the ability to purchase renewable energy resources from wind power, solar power, bio-mass and small hydropower facilities.
Customers participating in GreenUp pay for their renewable energy based on their total electricity usage each month. The charge is in addition to current monthly costs and will be added as a separate line item in their bill.

For a typical customer using 500 kilowatt-hours of electricity per month, the average additional monthly cost could range between $6 and $12.50. The price varies depending on the type of renewable energy resource used.
Approved by the Rhode Island Public Utilities Commission in February, GreenUp is a collaborative between Narragansett Electric, renewable energy companies and state government agencies to stimulate the development of renewable energy resources.
Companies in the program include People’s Power & Light in Providence; Community Energy Inc. of Wayne, Pa.; Conservation Services Group Inc. of Westborough, Mass.; and Sterling Planet of Alpharetta, Ga.
