PROVIDENCE – While Tropical Storm Irene forced many Rhode Island residents to “power down,” GTECH was already planning on doing so.

GTECH Corp. also asked its employees to turn off their desktop computers, monitors, printers and other nonessential electronics before they left the office for the weekend.
Power IT Down Day encourages companies around the world to power down their IT equipment and turn off the lights before leaving the office; the initiative estimates that an average of 13 kilowatt hours per person can be saved overnight by turning IT equipment off.
This year, the event fell on a Friday which “dramatically increased” the amount of energy saved by powering down for the entire weekend. According to the Power IT Down Day website, 26,504 people signed up for the 2011 initiative.
