GTECH to launch After School Advantage program at Meeting Street

EAST PROVIDENCE, R.I. — Meeting Street is set to become the 63rd beneficiary of GTECH Corp.’s After School Advantage program, an endeavor aimed at making technology more accessible to disadvantaged youth in after school programs.

The program is scheduled to officially launch at 1 p.m. today. Meeting Street, which is Rhode Island’s seventh site to benefit from the program, serves developmentally delayed or disadvantaged children.

Unlike other beneficiaries of the program, Meeting Street is not located in an inner city. However, disabled children face similar obstacles to accessing technology that children in inner cities face — according to the U.S. Dept. of Commerce, more than 70 percent of people with disabilities have no access to computers.

U.S. Rep. Patrick Kennedy, Secretary of State Edward Inman and GTECH’s CEO and president Howard Cohen are expected to attend the opening ceremony.

GTECH has pledged $3.3 million to the After School Advantage program over three years. The company estimates it spends an average of $20,000 in computers, on-line technology, software and volunteer hours at each site.
