Hasbro, last week, reported a larger than expected first quarter loss of some
$25 million, or 15 cents per share. For the same period a year ago, the company
showed a profit of $15.1 million, or 8 cents per share. Revenues dropped 40 percent
to $463.3 million from $773.5 million a year ago. Company officials were projecting
a second quarter similar to the first, but a return to profitability in the third
quarter as a result of the introduction of new products. Hasbro’s troubles are
a reflection of the industry. "The last year has been really bad for the
toy industry in general," Cliff Annicelli, editor of the online trade journal
Playthings.com told the Associated Press.
