MANSFIELD, MASS. — Vacuum technology developer Helix Technology Corp. said it lost $3.2 million, or 14 cents per diluted share, during the second quarter.
During the year-ago period, the company earned $9.8 million, or 43 cents per diluted share.

Second quarter sales dropped by more than half, to $26.6 million, compared to $58.5 million during the same period last year.
In a statement accompanying second quarter results, Helix president Robert J. Lepofsky said Helix customers worldwide “remain cautious and uncertain about new commitments. These are clearly very challenging times for everyone in the semiconductor capital equipment industry.” He expressed confidence in Helix’s strong market position, new product development programs, and customer support, and said the company was poised to participate in the next investment phase of the semiconductor capital equipment industry in 2002.
