Nicholas C. Donohue, the “special master” hired by the state to oversee the reconstitution of Providence’s Hope High School, is leaving next month to become president and CEO of the Nellie Mae Education Foundation in Quincy, Mass.
Donohue was hired by Education Commissioner Peter McWalters in March 2005 to help the long-troubled school comply with a state order to reorganize itself into three small “learning communities” and address a wide range of academic, disciplinary and other issues.

He has issued three reports, each saying that satisfactory progress was being made. McWalters said he has “no immediate plans” to replace Donohue.
“Nick has done exemplary work in his year-and-a-half on the job at Hope,” McWalters said. “Now we’re in a moment of transition. The work before us now is more about supporting capacity for change at the district level. While we continue to monitor the implementation of the order at Hope, we will now be focusing our efforts at the district level.”
