The Rhode Island House passed a bill yesterday sponsored by Sen. V. Susan Sosnowski, a Democrat who represents South Kingstown and New Shoreham, that expands the definition of farming and enables farmers to diversify their operations.
“It is becoming increasingly difficult to earn a living by farming alone,” said Sosnowski, an organic farmer and chairwoman of the Senate Committee of Environment and Agriculture. “This bill helps farmers earn a living without being forced to abandon agriculture altogether. It’s a good bill that will help stimulate the economy and contribute to the preservation of agriculture.”

The legislation (2004-S 2166) amends the “Right to Farm” act to expand the definition of farming. The legislation enables farmers to diversify their operations by initiating various support activities to benefit the economic livelihood of their businesses, such as through farm stores, tours, bed and breakfast business, corn mazes or other activities.
The measure will now head to the governor for his consideration.
