F1 Boston, an indoor, high-performance go-kart racetrack in Braintree, Mass., offers a genuine racing experience that is a big step up from the days of kiddy racecars. Anyone 18 or older and with a valid driver’s license can drive. Although no prior racing experience is required, F1 Boston operators warn: “This is real racing.”
Drivers are given a short safety course before donning full-body race suits, face-guarded helmets and neck braces. As many as 30 karts compete against each other in 10-lap races around one of two professionally designed tracks.
F1 Boston promotes itself as an ideal venue for corporate events and entertainment. It offers team-building courses that urge participants to tap into feelings of “speed, adrenaline, power and control.” Teams work together in pit crews and race against other teams.
Corporate groups get full use of the 106,000 square-foot facility, which includes conference rooms for team-building sessions; a 5,200-square-foot exhibition hall for celebrations and banquets, café and lounges, private dining, billiards rooms, retail shops, and two indoor racetracks.
F1 Boston, which opened in June 2000, was designed a built specifically for corporate events and outings. The $8 million project was co-created by Richard J. Valentine, a professional racecar driver, Boston-area entrepreneur and Chairman of The MBA Group, a business conglomerate.
Valentine said he wanted to find a safe venue that would bring the thrill of racing to his friends and business associates and decided the European-style indoor racing facility did just that.
“It allows every licensed driver to participate in racing without spending years training and millions of dollars to field a professional race team,” said Valentine, according to a statement posted on F1 Boston’s Web site.
