J.C. Penney has opened its first-ever department store in Providence. The new store, at Providence Place mall, officially opened Friday at 10 a.m. with a ribbon-cutting celebration.
Although new to Providence, the 103-year-old retailer has served Rhode Island since 1927. The new store will contribute approximately 120 jobs to the city’s economy, the company said.

The J.C. Penney store is replacing the former Lord & Taylor spot at the mall.
“We’re looking forward to being part of such a dynamic community and serving the people of Providence with the best that J.C. Penney has to offer,” said store manager Monique Murphy.
The store, covering 120,000 square feet, is designed in the company’s latest format with wider aisles and improved lighting. The store will carry such brands as Arizona Jean Co., Chris Madden for J.C. Penney Home Collection, nicole by Nicole Miller, Worthington, Stafford, Carter’s, Nike and more.
The store will also feature a portrait studio and full-service salon offering hair styling services, facials, pedicures, manicures, waxing and certain products. Customers can also place orders or pick up catalog and Internet purchases at the store’s catalog center.
Throughout the grand opening week, customers can register to win prizes, including a 2006 Saturn VUE automobile, a 40-inch HD LCD television and a laptop computer package. In addition, 20 shoppers will win $250 gift cards to be used toward any J.C. Penney purchase. Other activities include product demonstrations and special discounts.
The store will operate Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 9:30 p.m., and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.
