Jewelry maker moving operations to Warwick

Herff Jones, which manufactures
graduation-related items and scholastic awards, will cut 156 jobs
when it closes its Indianapolis ring production plant by May 28,
the Indianapolis Star reported.

In March, Indianapolis-based Herff Jones said it was moving
its ring production to Warwick, where much U.S.
jewelry is manufactured, the newspaper said. The Warwick plant
could reduce production costs without moving manufacturing jobs
overseas, the Star said, citing Herff Jones Scholastic Division
general manager Joe Slaughter.

Herff Jones, one of the largest employee-owned companies in
the nation, has 3,500 workers at 17 U.S. sites, the paper said. The
factory closing will leave 200 employees at Herff Jones’
Indianapolis headquarters and 160 at a nearby factory that
produces graduation announcement paper, the paper said.

Founded in 1920, Herff Jones makes class rings, yearbooks,
graduation caps and gowns, diplomas, the Heisman Trophy and robes
for the U.S. Supreme Court justices, the paper said.
