A Moscow court is deliberating over
whether to release former AO Yukos Oil Co. Chief Executive Mikhail
Khodorkovsky, pending trial on fraud and tax evasion charges,
after a two-day hearing in Moscow.
Russia’s Prosecutor General yesterday asked the Basmanny
district court to hold Khodorkovsky until at least March 31. A
decision is expected before 6 p.m. Moscow time, attorney’s for
Khodorkovsky said.

Khodorkovsky, Russia’s richest man, was arrested Oct. 25
after a four-month investigation that included searches at the
offices of Yukos, its lawyers and an orphanage the company funds.
Authorities later froze a 40 percent stake in Yukos, Russia’s
biggest oil producer. The investigation has raised investor
concerns about property rights in Russia.
Khodorkovsky, who has funded political parties that oppose
President Vladimir Putin, denies the charges against him and says
they are politically motivated. Parties allied to Putin won 58
percent of the vote in parliamentary elections this month.
Putin has said the prosecutors are independent and everyone
must be equal in front of the law.
