WOONSOCKET – Landmark Medical Center began construction on its $6 million Southern New England Regional Cancer Center late last month. The 12,000-square-foot center is in partnership with Lahey Clinic and Radiation Therapy Services Inc., which currently operates 37 cancer centers nationwide.
The center, being built by Cranston-based O. Ahlborg & Sons Inc., is expected to be operational by next fall.
“This day has been a long time coming,” said Gary J. Gaube, Landmark’s president and CEO. “We finally have all the necessary permits and plans in place to begin construction.”
In northern Rhode Island, the incidence of cancer is 29 percent higher than the U.S. average and 8 percent higher than the rest of the state, the hospital said in a press release.
State’s first ‘green and smart’ office opens
PROVIDENCE – The state’s first “green and smart” office building was scheduled to be unveiled this week with a grand opening Nov. 10 at 17 Gordon Ave. in South Providence. Officially known as the Gordon Avenue Business Incubator, the green and smart features of the building include energy-saving technology and advanced high-tech wiring.
The development has drawn support from nearly 20 public and private partners and will provide nearly 18,000 square feet of office space in various space configurations. Other features include off-street parking, conference and meeting rooms and off-street loading. The total development cost for the project is estimated at $2.7 million.
Six tenants have signed leases for the building: Compassionate Health Care, The Glimpse Foundation, Liberty Workforce Services, Partners, AC Electrical Systems and the Providence Police Department’s Gordon Avenue Community Police Sub-station.
