Property owners must comply by July 1, 2005

Rhode Island Association of Realtors said.

Though the legislation was passed two years ago, public outreach about compliance requirements did not begin until the end of last month, the release said. Thousands of property owners were said to be caught off-guard and found themselves faced with the task of taking a three-hour lead course and inspecting and mitigating lead paint problems in thousands of rental properties before the July 1, 2004 deadline. In response, a bill to extend the deadline for one year was passed unanimously in the Senate (S3170) and a similar bill passed 64 to 2 in the House (H8614). Governor Don Carcieri signed the new compliance date into law June 30.
Approximately 145,000 rental units will be affected by the new lead legislation which carries with it both time and fiscal requirements for property owners.
