Legislators seek input on post office closure

SMITHFIELD – Sen. John J. Tassoni Jr., D-Smithfield, and Rep. Peter J. Petrarca, D-Lincoln, are asking residents to attend a meeting to discuss the potential closing of the Old County Road post office.
The meeting will take place at 6 p.m. Aug. 16, at the Smithfield Town Hall, 64 Farnum Pike.
The legislators last month voiced their opposition to a plan by the U.S. Postal Service that lists 13 Rhode Island branch offices – including the one at 290 Old County Road – for possible closure. The USPS said it plans to examine the total workload of the 13 offices and consider their proximity to other branches before making a final decision. In the meantime, the USPS said it is seeking public input.
In a statement, the legislators said the closing “will be an enormous inconvenience to the many residents who use it, especially those who live in two nearby elderly and disabled housing complexes.” &#8226
