Marriage group seeks R.I. PAC exemption

PROVIDENCE – The National Organization for Marriage – a group that opposes same-sex marriage – has sued the R.I. Board of Elections in hopes that it can run ads in political races but not have to comply with state campaign finance laws.
The Associated Press reported that the organization said in a federal lawsuit that it should not have to report its expenditures or comply with spending limits required for political action committees. The group argues that it isn’t a PAC “because it’s not controlled by a political candidate and does not spend most of its money on Rhode Island’s political races,” the AP reported.
The group is looking to run ads in the Rhode Island governor’s race and other local contests.
According to the AP, one ad features a young girl who says that she learned in school “about a prince who married a prince. And I can marry a princess.” The ad then calls on viewers to contact Democrat Frank T. Caprio or independent Lincoln Chafee, the two frontrunners in the Rhode Island governor’s race. Both have said they support same-sex marriage. &#8226
