WALTHAM – Sales of single-family homes in Massachusetts continue to rise from month to month, with sales up more than 15 percent from June 2003 and up more than 24 percent from May, according to the state’s real estate group.
Condos also continued to sell in large numbers, while average selling price for both increased at a slower pace.
In June, 5,898 single-family homes were sold in Massachusetts, compared to the 5,096 homes sold in June 2003, an increase of 15.7 percent, and a 24.7 percent increase when compared to the 4,734 homes sold in May, according to a report from the Massachusetts Association of Realtors.

Average selling price for a single-family home in June was $429,654, a 6.8 percent increase from last June’s price of $402,164, and a 3 percent increase from the May 2004 price of $417,162.
Sales of condominiums skyrocketed in June to 2,317, a jump of 41.9 percent compared to June 2003’s sale of 1,633 condos, and a 23.4 percent increase compared to May 2004’s 1,878 condos sold, the association said.
Average selling price for a condo in June was $314,938, a 9.7 percent jump from the average price in June 2003 of $287,033 and 3.4 percent higher than the May 2004 price of $304,684.
Southcoast Hospital ERs rank 6th busiest in U.S.
FALL RIVER – Southcoast Hospitals’ emergency rooms are among the busiest in the country, according to Modern Healthcare, a major hospital trade journal, which ranked Southcoast No. 6 among the top 25 busiest community hospital emergency departments in the United States.
St. Luke’s Hospital in New Bedford, Charlton Memorial Hospital in Fall River and Tobey Hospital in Wareham treated a combined 162,275 people in 2002, according to the hospital group. The only other New England hospitals on the top 25 list were UMass Memorial Medical Center in Worcester, ranked 22nd, and Rhode Island Hospital ranked 24th.
St. Luke’s ranks as one of the busiest emergency departments in Massachusetts with almost 73,000 visits per year, Southcoast said. The journal survey used fiscal year 2002 data that shows the total ER visits at Southcoast’s three hospitals at 162,275. In 2002, St. Luke’s had 71,024 visits, Charlton had 67,116 visits and Tobey had 24,135 visits. The number of visits has increased since that time, the hospital group said.
